Bio
Tyrique Detter is currently completing a BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in ceramics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. By celebrating an excess of color, instability, and physical evidence of touch, he is only guided by an awareness of emotion or memory evoked though making. His work emphasizes the immediacy of experience, a deep sense of materiality, and authenticity of process. He has shown work in the Medici Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Artist Statement
The pieces I create are sculptural objects that emerge through an intuitive and emotional process. I celebrate excess of color, instability, and physical evidence of touch. Because of this, I am guided only by a sense of scale, a chosen color palette, and an awareness that emotion or memory can be evoked through making. Beginning with a hand-built, idealized form, I then carve, tear, and scar the clay, pressing rocks, sticks, and other found natural material into its surface. These textures and impressions serve as a rigid shell that takes on an unfamiliar and often unattractive quality. I then slice or dissect these forms to alter them further. I use this deformed object as a canvas, onto which I drip and smear beaded, crawling, and foamy, lava-like colors onto it.
For me, making my work is not only a process, but a translation. The studio becomes a space where emotion can be externalized and reconstructed through physical engagement. As a result, the work tends to feel both ugly and wrong, having been conceived as something alien and otherworldly. This disconnect feels true to the internal experience I am trying to express. Rather than being representations of nature, the work utilizes its processes and behaviors to express emotional turmoil, angst, and dysfunction.
